Raghav Chadha’s Political Journey:
Since the AAP’s founding in 2012, Raghav Chadha has been a member of the organization. According to media reports, he met AAP founder and convenor Arvind Kejriwal during the final leg of Anna Hazare’s 2011 anti-corruption movement, and he was encouraged to take part in the drafting of the Delhi Lokpal Bill.
Since then, he has played a crucial role in the party, representing it in debates on news channels and serving on numerous committees. As the AAP’s litigation in-charge, he is responsible for managing the party’s and its leaders’ most important legal cases. Chadha was one of the nine advisors to various departments that the AAP government in Delhi appointed. Following the cancellation of the nine appointments by the Union government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chadha made headlines by returning the Rs 2.50 he had reportedly been paid by the government for his services.
In 2012, Mr. Kejriwal encouraged him to draft the Delhi Lokpal Bill, which happened to be his first political assignment. He became the TV face of the AAP and the party’s youngest national spokesperson overall, as well as one of the youngest within the party. At the age of 26, Chadha was named national treasurer of the AAP following the party’s majority victory in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election. Along with nine other advisors, Rajnath Singh, the former Union Minister of Home Affairs, terminated his role as Manish Sisodia’s advisor in April 2018. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Chadha ran as a candidate from the South Delhi constituency.
He was defeated by BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri in the election by a landslide of fifty percent of the vote. BJP heavyweights Madan Lal Khurana, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Sushma Swaraj, Ramesh Bidhuri, and Balraj Madhok of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the party’s ideological and political forerunner, have all represented South Delhi since the 1980s. Chadha was named AAP Punjab co-in-charge for the 2020 Punjab Legislative Assembly election while still a leader of the AAP. He ran from Rajendra Nagar in the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election against RP Singh of the BJP and won the seat. Following this, he was given a water portfolio in the Delhi Government and appointed vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
It was announced on March 21, 2022, that Chadha and four other Punjabi members of the Rajya Sabha would be nominated by the AAP to serve six-year terms beginning in 2022. No contender for opposition opposed their election. At 33, he became the youngest MP as a result. Additionally, he was appointed to the Rajya Sabha’s Standing Committee on Finance in the Parliament. The committee is in charge of the laws and policies that the NITI Aayog and three union ministries have drafted.
Chadha stated in April 2022 that the BJP resettled Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees in Delhi and exploited them to incite unrest. Recognized for the party’s achievements in Punjab, Chadha was named co-chief of staff for the 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election on September 18, 2022. He was then appointed as the leader of AAP in Rajya Sabha. Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann named Chadha as the Chairman of an Advisory Panel following the AAP’s victory in the State. The High Court dismissed a plea contesting his appointment.
